Metro K9 Academy develops dogs and handlers for high-level sport and service. Schutzhund (IGP) reveals true working ability through structured tracking, obedience, and protection while emphasizing stability, control, and clear decision-making under pressure. Our program translates those same fundamentals to police K9 foundations and maintenance work in a safe, handler-first environment.
What is Schutzhund (IGP)?
Originating as a breed-worthiness test for German Shepherds, Schutzhund—now called IGP—assesses temperament, nerve strength, and trainability through three phases completed at progressive levels. It remains one of the most demanding working-dog disciplines and a gold standard for evaluating reliable performance.
The Three Phases We Train
Tracking
Footstep tracking that builds independence, article indication, and calm problem-solving. Dogs learn to work ahead in a disciplined, methodical manner without handler conflict.
Obedience
Precise heeling, motion exercises, retrieves over jump and A-frame, recall, and send-away—delivered with focus and joy. We build clarity first, then proof under distraction for ring-ready performance.
Protection
Genetic courage meets strict control. We prioritize neutrality, threat discrimination, powerful grips, and immediate outs – stable behavior that proves the dog’s nerves and the handler’s control.

Commitment & Requirements
IGP is a serious commitment of time and consistency. Metro K9 provides the plan, reps, and coaching; you bring daily practice and steady handling. Dogs must be in good health and temperament-tested before protection work.
